Lesson 8- Single Sex Classrooms

List and describe 2-3 possible advantages of single sex classrooms.

The possible advantages of single sex classrooms are Boys and girls performed significantly higher on standardized tests when they attended gender-specific schools. Nearly every girl regardless of her ability or socioeconomic status performed better in single sex classrooms than co-ed ones. Fewer Cliques The girls again do not have to worry about impressing boys or seeming popular, common concerns in middle and high school. They can instead concentrate on their studies and being open to befriending the other girls, and there are often fewer cliques as a result.

List and describe 2-3 potential disadvantages of single sex classrooms.

The potential disadvantages of single sex classrooms is by putting one sex into a class room we are taking a trip back in time from when blacks and whites were segregated. Some say that is a different matter but I along with others do not think so. Separate is never equal, one gender will get a better advantage than the other and that is unfair. By keeping them separate we risk the fact of turning each gender against one another.

After watching the videos and reading the articles, describe your stance on the single sex classroom issue. Provide some reasons why you agree or disagree with the concept. Also, you might want to answer these questions: Would you want to be educated in single-sex classrooms? Why or why not? Would you want your children educated in single-sex classrooms? Why or why not?

As a student that comes from a single-sex classroom/school I’m pretty much against single-sex classrooms. I feel as though one gender will get a better advantage than the other, and that is segregation. As a future teacher I wouldn’t to be put in the predicament of teaching all girls or even all boys. I feel as though it will take away the learning processes on how to get along with one another. As a parent you shouldn’t want your child being taught in a single-sex classroom because they would lack in many areas of socializing with others.

Are single-sex classrooms a form of discrimination? Explain.

Being a student that comes from a school that enforced single-sex classrooms I feel as though that’s discrimination because of all the reason why single-sex is better than a co-ed classroom. Single-sex classrooms discriminates between all students. Especially boys because of the reason that girls perform better in academics in a single-sex classroom.

Summary: I found this lesson very interesting. Due to the fact that people actually would want their child taught in single sex classrooms. I find it hard to see why people would want to segregate our children again. It is their right to talk/play among other genders, because later in life they will have to work together.

Research Question: What do parents think of single-sex classrooms?

Research Analysis: Parents and educators have debated single-sex education for years, and the number of schools offering single gender classes has grown. But some researchers argue there is no evidence that boys and girls learn differently and that gender separation can perpetuate sexist stereotypes.

Some parents don't want their children to be in mixed-gender classrooms because, especially at certain ages, students of the opposite sex can be a distraction. Leonard Sax and others agree that merely placing boys in separate classrooms from girls accomplishes little. But single-sex education enhances student success when teachers use techniques geared toward the gender of their students.

Research Summary: I’m quite disturb by the research that I’ve came across about what parents think of single-sex classrooms. As a student that comes from a school that enforce single-sex classrooms I hated the idea of being in an all-girls classroom. I feel as if single-sex classrooms are pointless and is a form of discrimination. Yes, single-sex classrooms has shown a major difference within students’ academic success but students’ will lack that ability to work with different sex gender. Single-sex classrooms doesn’t give you a chance to interact with others.
