Lesson 2 -Elementary School Research

According to research cited in the paper, what was the most important variable mentioned for school success?

The most important variable mentioned for schools success is culture focused on student learning and the increase in, and protection of, students’ learning time.

Describe why you think this might be the case?

I think this might be the case because some teachers rely more so on creative scheduling and a focus on data driven instruction to implement support and enrichment programs in their schools.

Describe how some schools celebrate their academic success?

Some schools celebrate their academic success by awarding their students with a celebration. As a future I feel as if student should not just be reward when they make good grades. You should award your students at the smallest things. To show that you care.

Should there be a National curriculum for all students? Why or why not?

As a future teacher I feel as if there should be a national curriculum because I personally believe that there needs to be a current national curriculum for all students. It needs to be the same for all states and all grades. Some kids are way behind others because of the low standards some states set for them. For example my cousin moved from Miami to Atlanta to attend school and she was way behind of her 10th grade class. As a result of her being behind it left her graduating a year behind her class.

List and describe some challenges for school success.

Some challenges for school success we believe that our society has become too focused on grades, test scores and performance, leaving little time and energy for our kids to become resilient, successful, meaningful contributors for the 21st century. Many schools label the students as numbers. Instead of trying to help the students that needs help. Every day, we provide families and schools with the practical, research-based tools they need to raise healthy, motivated kids. Success, after all, is measured not at the end of the semester, but over the course of a lifetime.

What was the purpose for this research study (Elementary School Research)? Describe.

The purpose for this research study was to compare and analyze the characteristics, practices, conditions, and programs of successful elementary schools. The successful elementary schools in this study were identified based on predetermined criteria. In these successful elementary schools, the schools’ cultures were conducive to building positive relationships and focused on increased student learning with high expectations for students and staff performance.

Summary: This lesson really taught me a lot about the school systems and how they work towards academic success. Instead of this lesson giving me a lot to read it also showed be tables and graphs to help me follow what has been found.

Research Question: Why are national curriculums bad?

Reference:http://blog.ctnews.com/kantrowitz/2011/05/09/why-one-national-curriculum-is-bad-for-america/

Research Analysis: First, there is no constitutional or statutory basis for national standards, national assessments, or national curricula. The two testing consortia funded by the U.S. Department of Education have already expanded their activities beyond assessment, and are currently developing national curriculum guidelines, models, and frameworks in accordance with their proposals to the Department of Education. Department of Education officials have so far not explained the constitutional basis for their procedures or forthcoming products. The U.S. Constitution seeks a healthy balance of power between states and the federal government, and wisely leaves the question of academic standards, curriculum, and instruction up to the states. In fact, action by the U.S. Department of Education to create national standards and curricula is explicitly proscribed by federal law, reflecting the judgment of Congress and the public on this issue.

Even if the development of national curriculum models, frameworks or guidelines were judged lawful, we do not believe Congress or the public supports having them developed by a self-selected group behind closed doors and with no public accountability. Whether curriculum developers are selected by the Shanker Institute or the U.S. Department of Education's testing consortia, they are working on a federally funded project to dramatically transform schools nationwide. They therefore ought to be transparent and accountable to Congress and the public.

Research Summary: I’m quite disturb by the research that I have looked over. As being a future I would like to have a national curriculum. Due to the fact that I would not want my students behind. Even the ones that are transfer students. My goal as a teacher should be to help my students graduate on time within their class year.
