Lesson 4-Standard Curriculum

In what ways can the use of standards improve the educational system? Describe.

The use of standards improve the educational system can become overbuilt if they are either too prescriptive or so numerous and comprehensive that there is simply not enough time to ensure that students learn and master every standard. In the second case, educators and others may debate whether teaching a specific set of learning standards is even likely, given the amount of time and the average number of years that students typically attend public school. And depending on how states structure their learning standards and related compliance requirements, there could be a wide variety of potential debates and criticism related to compliance obligations, including whether schools have sufficient time and funding to meet the requirements, or whether teachers have been given the training they need to modify their lessons and bring them into alignment with standards.

What are some of the potential limitations? List and explain.

Some of the potential limitations of having standards in an educational system can severely limits the opportunities for students to learn by enforcing a one-size-fits all curriculum. Standardization here tends to shift professional practice towards content coverage and away from deep understanding.

List and describe at least three (3) reasons why BASIS High School is the top performing public high school in the nation. Each reason you provide must be described in at least one paragraph or more - do NOT provide a bullet list!

BASIS High School is the top performing public high school in the nation because of three reasons: students get more adult attention and are less likely to be lost in the crowd, students spend more time within the classrooms and parents are more active within their kids’ education. These reason basically shows that the students that attend a BASIS High School have more of a support system than others students. As a student it is important to have some type of support to navigate thru your journey in success.

Who is John Gatto referring to in his quote (above) as "some people"? Explain why "some people" would think that our form of schooling is "useful". Hint - you might have to do some Internet research.

Within this quote; "It's very useful for some people that our form of schooling tells children what to think about, how to think about it, and when to think about it" John Gatto refers to “some people” as in the people who really doesn’t know about the school system in America. They would think that our form of schooling is useful because they see that our students perform well within and without of the classrooms.

Summary: This lesson was very interesting because I learned things about the school system I didn’t know. Also this lesson taught me some of the disadvantages of having a standardization.

Research Question: Why do parents prefer private schools over public schools?

Reference:http://neatoday.org/2013/12/10/how-public-schools-have-the-edge-over-private-schools-2/

Research Analysis: As any parent who has toured both kinds of school knows, it's not always easy to answer these questions. Many people have a bias one way or another. Some assume that private schools offer superior everything, justifying their tuition costs. Others contend that public schools provide more real-life experiences or, in some cases, more-developed specialty programs in athletics or science.

While this primer won't dare takes sides, it will touch on the most fundamental differences between public and private schools as well as a few subtle distinctions that might make all the difference for your child.

The most obvious discrepancy between public and private schools comes down to cold, hard cash. The good news for parents is that public schools cannot charge tuition. The bad news is that public schools are complicated, often underfunded operations influenced by political winds and shortfalls. Financed through federal, state, and local taxes, public schools are part of a larger school system, which functions as a part of the government and must follow the rules and regulations set by politicians.

Research Summary: I am quite shock by the information I’ve came across. Due to the fact that I come from a public school system. After reading over the information it had me thinking do parents really feel as if private school is better for their kids. Of course parents want the best education for their kids but you as a parent shouldn’t down grade students who have or attend public schools.
