Lesson 2

Why do some students not feel welcome at their high school proms?

Some students may not feel welcome at their high school proms because some may be gay and want to dress according to their sexual preference. The dress code may say boys dress like boys and girls dress like girls. Some students may not have the funds. To purchase the extravagant gowns or tuxedos and may want to come in their everyday attire.

  • What could school officials do to ensure that the needs of a diverse group of students are met at school proms and other school activities?

To ensure that the needs are met at school proms school officials could change the dress code. Allowing students to dress according to their sexual preference, nationality and to express their individuality. To ensure that the needs are met at other school activities school officials could have a more diversity event. Making sure that all nationality are being met.

  • Would you ever be in favor of a segregated prom? Why or why not?

I am not in favor of segregating proms because it would change the way kids think about each other. Also it cause kids to feel as if they are different because of their skin color and nationality. Which will cause a lot of discrimination within the school. It will be as if history has repeat itself.

  • Regarding the Hate map, select Georgia in the state text box - a list of current hate groups will be provided. By clicking on some of the hate groups, provide a description of at least two (2) different types of hate groups that are still in existence and why they were formed. You might want to provide a location as well as a description. The response to this question should be at least two (2) full paragraphs.

Black separatism is a movement to create separate institutions for people of African descent in societies historically dominated by whites, particularly in the United States. Black separatists typically oppose integration and racial intermarriage, and they want separate institutions or even a separate nation for black people in America. Most current forms of black separatism are strongly anti-white and anti-Semitic, and a number of religious versions assert that blacks not Jews are the Biblical "chosen people" of God.

The Ku Klux Klan, with its long history of violence, is the most infamous - and oldest - of American hate groups. Although black Americans have typically been the Klan's primary target, it also has attacked Jews, immigrants, gays and lesbians and, until recently, Catholics. Over the years since it was formed in December 1865, the Klan has typically seen itself as a Christian organization, although in modern times Klan groups are motivated by a variety of theological and political ideologies.

    Summary

This lesson has taught me that history has repeat itself. Over the years it has gotten worst. From hate crimes to even still being segregated. Some people doesn’t even realize the effects that has took place. Which is effecting our kids and the way that they thing about each other.

Research Question: Which states has the highest hate crimes?

Hate crimes are “crimes that manifest evidence of prejudice based on race, gender or gender identity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.” The FBI is charged under the Hate Crime Statistics Act with compiling statistics on hate crimes. In its most recent report, for 2012, it counted 5,796 incidents resulting in 7,164 victims. That was a decline from the previous year, in which the FBI tallied 6,222 incidents.

Separately, the Bureau of Justice Statistics has been collecting data on crimes motivated by hate since 2003 for its National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). That survey, which includes data on crimes believed by the victims to have been motivated by hate but not reported to police, showed a spike in hate crimes from 2011 to 2012.

Hate crimes were down across the country in 2011, according to the annual report from the FBI. The report identified 6,222 hate crime incidents motivated by bias against a particular race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disability in 2011. This shows a slight decrease from 2010, which saw 6,628 incidents, and 2009, which saw 6,604 incidents. The District of Columbia was relatively the worst state for the second year running, with 13 incidents per 100,000 people in 2011.
